The Daily Star – Another ship-breaker killed

22 September 2011 – A worker was killed and two others were injured when a huge iron-plate fell on them at a ship-breaking yard in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong early Thursday.

Farid, 22, worker of SRS Ship Breaking Yard located at Jor Amtal area in the upazila died on the spot when the iron plate fell on him, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

Two other workers — Alam, 20, and Saiful, 22, — were also injured during the incident. They were given first aid.

Rakibudaulla Chowdhury, manager of the ship-breaking yard, told The Daily Star that the accident took place around 9:30am when the workers were wielding the iron-plate.

On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, said Aminul Islam, sub-inspector of Sitakunda Police Station.

The body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) morgue for autopsy, he added.

With this, nine people have been killed so far in separate incidents at six ship breaking yards this year.
