Country of ownership: Spain
Current position: Anglet, France
On 5 February 2014 the 100 meter-long Spanish cargo ship “Luno” smashed into an embankment whilst the ship was being manoeuvered to enter the port of Bayonne, on the French Atlantic coast. Due to bad weather conditions, the ship broke into two pieces, one of which remained stuck on the embankment, whilst the second one got stuck in the sand. The crew of 12 was safely rescued. Antipollution teams were dispatched to Anglet, the seaside town close to the port of Bayonne where the ship is beached.
French NGO Surfrider Foundation Europe is following closely the clean-up operations. The NGO Shipbreaking Platform will continue to monitor the situation as the damaged ship will probably be dismantled directly on the beach.
