Muhammed Babul, 40 years old

“I started working on the shipbreaking yards after a storm in 1988 took away my family’s home and everything else we owned. We had nothing left to survive. I had no idea of what to expect at the yards but I desperately wanted to change my fate. I got the job in the yards at 20, and started working as a cutter helper. In the years I have worked here, I have seen many accidents on the shipbreaking yards and even people dying in front of me.”

“In 2002, it was such a shock for me when I experienced the death of my closest friend in the yard. He suffocated by inhaling toxic gases while breaking a ship. The work here frustrates me greatly. I have no joy, I am just living this life to support my family.”
