Muhammed Helal, 24 years old

“I lost my father at a very early age and came here with one of my uncles who worked in Chittagong. I started working at the yards in 1999 when I was just 12 years old. At the beginning, I was very scared and often cried at night because I missed my home and my family. I am trying my best to send as much money as I can back home.”

“There are no safety measures implemented by the shipbreaking yard owners and no one cares about us. I will never forget the day that one of my fellow workers died because he was not able to be treated after an accident on the yard because there were no emercengy medical facilities nor doctors close by.”
