“I have been working on the yards for the past 10 years and I am one of the leaders of the group. I would have like to stay at home (in the North of Bangladesh) and continue to cultivate my crops but the money was not enough to sustain my family. At the shipbreaking yards, we work with no safety equipment because it is not provided to us and we cannot afford to get our own. I get very scared when I’m working on the yards, especially when we are loading the heavy metal plates onto the trucks. If they fall, they can break a person’s arm, leg, or even kill them! I worry a lot about the children that work on the yard because they are the most vulnerable.”
