27 June 2014 - After being retained for a month, Mitsui OSK Lines’ car ship Global Spirit has been sent to scrapping in Turkey. The ship was otherwise headed for India when the Belgium authorities interfered.
The Belgian authorities were not willing to release the car ship Global Spirit – which has been detained for one month in Antwerp – until the owners agreed to have the vessel scrapped in Turkey, says Brussels-based NGO Shipbreaking Platform in a press release.
The organization is working to ensure responsible shipbreaking conditions, which are especially absent in countries such as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, according to the NGO.
“We applaud Belgium for having stopped the Japanese ship from sailing ti Alang, India, where the vessel would have been broken under very hazardous conditions, an export which would have been illegal under European law,” says Ingvild Jenssen, Policy Advisor at Shipbreaking Platform, in a comment.
The organization will now call on Mitsui OSK Lines and Nissan Car Carriers to make the carriers comply with the rules.
