The Daily Star – Ship-breaking worker killed in accident

2 August 2012 - A ship-breaking worker died early yesterday from injury sustained while working in the yard.

The dead was identified as Mohammad Liton, 22, son of Shefat Ali, from Sirajganj. He was working at United Ship Breaking yard at Jora Amtal in Sitakunda upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Samiul Alam of Sitakunda Police Station said Liton slipped and fell over an iron plate in the yard and received head injuries, while working in the drizzle around 3:00pm on Tuesday.

Badly injured Liton was admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he died around 12.30am, said the OC.

Filing of a case was under process, he added.

It was the third such accident only in July where three workers died in three different ship scrap yards.

A total of six workers have so far met tragic deaths while working in different ship-breaking yards in this year since February 28.
