26 November 2015 - The management of Steel Industrials Kerala Limited (SILK) has approached the City Police seeking protection for its ship-breaking unit at Beypore.
SILK made the request directly to City Police Commissioner P.A. Valsan in the wake of protests from local people and some trade union members against the unit.
A senior officer attached to SILK told The Hindu here on Wednesday that a sudden closure of the unit in the name of some isolated protests would not be possible as SILK was one of the leading public sector undertakings in Kerala. “The policy of the government is to run this unit and the management is bound to proceed with the entrusted duties,” he said.
The officer said SILK had an open stance on the issue and the concerns raised by the people over the functioning of the unit.
