Norwegian shipping company NOCC, short for Norwegian Car Carriers ASA, beached the Ro-Ro “Vibeke” on 4 February 2014. The company sold for the ship for financial reasons, as reported by Reuters. NOCC said the ship would be dismantled according to the Hong Kong Convention rules, a convention which has not yet entered into force. No shipbreaking yard can therefore be compliant with the convention. No ship sold for breaking to an beaching yard will ever be dismantled in a clean and safe way. Even if shipbrokers and/or cash buyers claim that they can offer “green recycling” services, the issues related to the worker safety, labour rights, and hazardous waste management remain the same.
